They actually started working with each other out of their houses. On one level there were a few of the developers, eight of them, that instead of going out and getting jobs somewhere else… they refused to give up. And there was several layers of bargaining that happened. But in this case, the bargaining was very healthy. You have to figure out how to get past there into acceptance. Now when we're talking about the death of a human being, there is no bargaining. And it's the bargaining phase where you're like trying to figure out if that's the way it really has to be, or if you can do something. You know, when you're going through the stages of grief, one of them is the bargaining phase. We all were kind of just rallying around our friend. It was maybe two or three weeks later, because the first thing was… George was a friend of mine. Were you already starting to think, maybe there's a happy ending here? When the heroes are up against the wall and there's no hope left… then usually it's the B story that comes in. If you think about it as a story you kind of need that dark moment. And when I think about Duke as part of my legacy, and that's the ending to the story… It's not a cool ending.

I'd always been rooting for the game, and I've always been looking forward to playing it, and having seen elements of if over the years, I especially wanted it, because everything I'd ever seen was just awesome. What did you think when you heard 3D Realms shut down production? I think the goal back then was to make a new game, an original game that had nothing to do with Duke Nukem Forever. But from that point on, Gearbox and 3D Realms were engaged with each other, and the idea of how we could help with Duke Nukem. Can we do something?' Duke Nukem 3D launched in May of '96, and my first work there was officially as a beta tester. So I moved out to Texas and I became part of the Duke Nukem 3D team. I chose 3D Realms because they published Wolfenheim 3D, and they were creating a new genre. , I got down to where I was deciding between two options, working for LucasArts on Star Wars video games, or this company in Texas called 3D Realms, where I would be working on Duke Nukem. I imagined that video games were created in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory or something, and there'd be little bits running around in the chocolate river, and then through this magical process, a game would come out on the other end. When you go to an arcade and see a big coin-operated box and it's got art on it, and it's all put together really well, then you know that's some kind of process that's out of reach to have that result. I never understood the difference between what I was doing as a hobby and how professional commercial things were made. It was on personal computers before we had graphics.
